WHEN A ROAR SAVED THE OLYMPUS AND CREATED PANIC

Have you ever felt a sudden, unexplained, and overwhelming anxiety, perhaps while walking through a silent place? That sense of total bewilderment we call “Panic” has an ancient origin and a truly bizarre “father”: the god Pan.
THE MYTH
"In ancient Greece, Pan was the wild god of the woods, known for startling travelers with the sudden sounds of his flute or by appearing unexpectedly from the bushes. But the story behind the term 'panic' and the constellation of Capricorn hides a secret that is far more epic and bloody."
When Zeus was left defenseless
It all began during the Typhonomachy, the most terrible war in mythology. The monster Typhon, a fearsome fire-breathing creature, challenged the gods for the dominion over the cosmos. The terror was so great that almost all the Olympians fled to Egypt, transforming themselves into animals to hide (Apollo became a crow, Artemis a cat, and Aphrodite a fish).
Zeus stayed to fight but was overwhelmed: Typhon managed to wound him severely, tearing out the tendons of his hands and feet, and imprisoning him, helpless, in a cave in Cilicia. The King of the Gods was defeated and mutilated.
The Rescue and Pan’s Shout
While the monstrous Delphyne guarded Zeus’s tendons, Pan and Hermes intervened. Pan used his most powerful weapon: his piercing shout
It was a cry so powerful and supernatural that it sparked a sudden, never-before-felt confusion and fear in the monster: “panic terror.” Taking advantage of the creature's distraction, the two managed to recover Zeus’s tendons and reattach them, giving the King of the Gods the strength to finally defeat Typhon beneath Mount Etna.
From Pan to Capricorn: A Half-Finished Transformation
Out of gratitude, Zeus wanted to honor Pan by placing him among the stars. But what form should the constellation take? He chose the one Pan had assumed during the flight to Egypt.
To escape, Pan had thrown himself into the Nile River, trying to transform into a fish. However, due to his haste, the transformation was only half-successful: the lower part, submerged in the water, became that of a fish, while the upper part remained that of a goat. Thus, the figure of Capricorn was born.
Today’s Decoding: Facing the Shadow
Oggi, in senso psicologico, l’attacco di panico è ancora strettamente collegato alla figura ed il Mito di Pan. Rappresenta l’incontro con le forze della natura selvaggia e incontrollata che abitano dentro di noi.
The myth teaches us that panic is not just destruction: it is a signal, a cry of the soul inviting us to face our fears and our most instinctive side (the Shadow). Just as Pan’s shout saved Zeus, sometimes our “panic” serves to break a pattern and restore our true strength.
